I have a old 60 Hp V4 Sovereign Gale that could use a new set of plugs and when I look to see which one I get from the Champion site, it says to use RJ12C of J11C.It has J4C in it now and ran ok 4 years ago.I hope someone can steer me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance

Howdy uncle.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Do not trust those plug type selection charts. They are more often wrong than right.

The original plug was Champion J4J that has been replaced by the J4C. If you do a lot of low speed or trolling you might try the J6C. Either plug is gapped at .030".

Thanks JB for the quick reply. The charts that I looked at were all different and gave me different #s as well.I do a lot of fishing so I will be going with the J6C type. Its not the best engine on fuel but it will idle down low and works well. The last time out with my Girl friend the shift linkage came apart stuck in reverse and we had to idle backwards down the lake 4miles to the boat ramp. She is ready to try fishing again 4 years later. :D

Whoever writes those Champion plug charts should be hanged. RJ12C and J11C are just so totally WRONG!!!!

I just got back from Walmart and saw a Champion book and looked up the Gale and sure enough it had the same wrong listing for it.And they had the plugs there for $7 +tax compared to $3.50 tax in at the auto parts store.I did a compression test and I think that it is low only 75 Lbs on all 4.Any idea what it should be?

Re: Gale 60 which spark plug

If you got the same 75psi on all 4 that is what your gauge and method produce. There is no chance, none, that all 4 cylinders would go bad by the same amount at the same time.

If she were warmed up ahead of time, with a fully charged, strong battery, a very good gauge and your method exactly matched the procedure in the Top Secret File you probably would have gotten higher numbers and learned nothing new.

What it should be is all 4 compressing within 10% of all others. You have a healthy engine.

Yep I got the same on all cylinders.I have two gauges to use and they were within a couple of pounds of each other. It has a intermittent miss but I have the wrong wires on it and will change them tonight and try it again. Thanks to this site I found that not any wire will work.:)One other thing is there a way to lubricate the starter motor because when it kicks out off the flywheel it makes a what sounds like a dry bushing whine. That could effect the compression test if its not spinning freely.Fishing season is almost here.:D
