Re: gale boat motor

It is a 1957 Gale Buccaneer # 12D15B, a 12 horsepower engine.
It takes a J4J or J6J plug or newer equivalent J4C or J6C.
The rest is much the same as 1957 Evinrude engines (they made them). Your Buccaneer takes 1/2 a pint of oil per gallon of gas/ 1:16

Most commonly needed parts are available here at iboats. Other parts, see your friendly Evinrude dealer. But you will need a parts book because he probably doesn't have one. Your motor is similar to, but not same as an Evinrude. There are some differences. Like a head gasket, for instance.

Re: gale boat motor

If I remember correctly, the Gale 12 shared the same block with the early Evinrude Fastwin 14-horse (1950-52) and the Elto 12 back to 1949. They are like the later 15-horse Evinrude 1953-56 except for a simplified, cheaper block casting (lacking removable exhaust bypass cover or something like that). I am not 100% certain, but somebody please correct me if I have it wrong.

Sort of correct. The early 12 was similar to the Evinrude 14hp. It is often called the wedge head block. Later 12hp design was similar to the Evinrude & Johnson 15hp. There is a world of difference between the "early" and "later" models. This guy's 1957 motor is the "later" one with removeable cyl head, based on the 15hp, but with smaller bore.

I appreciate the info Frank.

So for head gaskets on a Gale 12, does one have to make their own, find NOS, or is there an enthusiast somewhere making them to order?

Head gasket is 552181. I guess try to find a NOS. But at least it would be a pretty easy one to make because they don't have the copper fire rings.
