Hello,
Was wondering if anyone had some good advise on this motor. Picked it up yesterday, has sat for ten years without use. Should I run the same mix ratio and what should I use for lower unit oil? It seems to be in great shape, although when I grab it by the tiller handle it seems to be a bit loose, not dis-attached from the power head but loose. Any suggestions or comments on how to run this motor successfully would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

The "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard" thread is a good place to start...covers how to check an old, sleepy motor coming out of storage.

Re: Gale Buccaneer 12S13B Questions

Thanks for the reply but what I guess Im looking for is oil/gas ratio, spark plug gap. Can I use Johnson oil that I use in my other motors. On the motor it says to use sae 90 and use half pint to a gallon which I believe works out to be 16:1. I also replaced lower unit oil with J/E HI-VIS, said to use on all non-electric shift Johnson and Evinrude products so I went ahead and used it. Everything else looks good. Looking for answers more specific to this motor. Anyone have one these that currently use it? Thanks.

The Hi-Vis is an excellent choice. The original fuel mix probably was 16:1, but was changed to 24:1 in the service manual. Don't be tempted to run it leaner than that. It has aluminum connecting rods.

Re: Gale Buccaneer 12S13B Questions

Thanks for the info...I got it to run but only with the throttle wide open, and not for long. Both high and low speed adjustments were tightened all the way in so I really had no starting place for them. Any idea how these should be set? Also there is a little pee hole on the front of the lower unit(above and on opposite side of prop)that seems to **** fuel when I turn it over and when it does run. Thank you again for all the valuable information.

Also the plugs that were in it were J-6J, which i crossed with a '55 Johnson 15 horse and it gave me the same result but I ended up with NGK B6s.(out here beggars definetly cant be choosers)

I believe tha hole is the crankcase drain excess fuel discharge.
You should start with a compression check. It will give you a rough idea of the condition of the motor.100 psi within 10% cylinder to cylinder is considered ideal minimum though it will run with less.
Normal needle valve setting ,both, is 3/4 turn out from gently bottomed. Then adjusted warm at speed.
If you haven't been through the fuel system with special attention to cleaning it isn't likely to run right. You should inspect the coils.Any deterioration requires replacement .

Re: Gale Buccaneer 12S13B Questions

Again thanks for the advise on this one Steelespike...I think I will make it a winter project and really go through it with care and hopefully run it this spring. Is there a general book that you could suggest that might cover J/E products from this era. Also is there someplace you could suggest getting carb kits, coils, etc from? I think your correct about the hole, I think it must just be flooding itself due to fact that it needs to be rebuilt, the cork float didnt look to promising to me :)

As suggested right here at iboats should have most of what you need
under E/J applications. Many of the vendors on ebay have excellent crossrference listings for parts. As far as ser.manuals I watch ebay.
Stumbled on a factory service manual covers most from 48-57 3 to 22hp.
I also have a number of aftermarket ser.manuals that cover all brands below 30hp 55-67 of course the last year for Gale was 63.
You may find a service manual at the library.
