Hi there,

I bought a '58 Sea King 25 hp, was told it's about the same as the mid 50'2 25 hp Johnnyrudes. After replacing the spark plugs and flushing the fuel lines (previously had some water in there) I've got it starting but running extremely rough - popping and shaking. It'll eventually quit after a while. I've tried toying with the running knob into the carb, and the slow speed knob seems to have stripped it's threads out and simply won't keep in. The threads on the needle itself are fine which leads me to think the threads in the carb housing may be stripped. Any advice on what to do? Compression for both cylinders is about 105.

The carb body is not threaded. Instead, there is supposed to be a threaded bushing way down in the hole, and the needle screws into the bushing. The whole assembly is held in place by the packing nut and packings.

You are correct, the motor was made by Gale Products Division of OMC and is related to the Evinrude and Johnson motors.

F_R is right, and I would add that the bushing that he speaks of, will often spin in the carb housing if the packing nut is too loose. If it is doing this in your motor, it will feel like "the threads have been stripped."

Try tightening the brass nut at the base of the low speed needle valve until there is moderate friction on the knob.

Start the low speed at about 1.5 turns from closed.

Start the high speed knob at about 1 full turn from closed.

I didn't see that you rebuilt the carb.If it has sat around for any length of time the carb will need a good cleaning with special attention to passages and jets fuel pump as well.Shaking and popping usually indicates a lean condition.Also if the coils haven't been changed you are probably struggling with weak spark.
They are the weak point of all OMCs of that era.

All good advice. I'll open it up and take a look - I do not know when the last time (if ever) the carb was serviced/rebuilt and have not checked the coils. Glad to hear there are no threads to be stripped on the needle valve! Should be fixable.

So I took it all apart and sure enough the coils are cracked - I'll get those replaced. Now for the mystery...

The needle point adjustment for the slow speed into the carb lacks any kind of threaded bushing. There are simply no threads for it to adjust into, all the way back to the inside. I pulled it all out and while the lower adjustment has threads to catch the needle rod the slow speed hole does not. It looks like there's room for a threaded bushing but it's not there, or was removed for some reason? How would I go about ordering a new threaded bushing? All the gaskets on the carb look new and the carb body itself is clean , so some servicing probably took place recently.

Also, does anyone know the part number for replacement coils?

Sekory,

Go to www.shop.evinrude.com, click on the parts tab, find the page for 1968 Evinrude 33hp motor, and then go to the carburetor group. Look at the parts explosion and find part #36 on the diagram. This is a "BUSHING, Needle Valve, slow speed" (Part #303939).

The carb on the '68 ERude 33hp is essentially the same as the one on your motor. In fact, the current part number item will probably fit your carb.
