I have just acquired this working 40hp motor and have a question on hook up.
On the left side of the cylinder there is a device i cannot find out what it is or does. there is a hose from the right front of the motor going into it there is a white wire in the center that goes up under the flywheel to a switch and has a lead wire . then there is a black wire on the lower corner for another lead wire. any help is welcome

Vacuum cut-out switch. It grounds one set of points when high crankcase vacuum is detected.

No 12-volt hookup. The wires simply kill one set of points if the engine ever runs-away and over-revs beyond control, triggered by powerhead vacuum. Check the wires, replace if they are frayed/broken, but leave it as is...nice safety feature.

Cut-out switch which shuts the motor off in case of a runaway.
Oops - just saw this was an old thread.

You are tacking onto an old thread, which is frowned upon. Please start your own new queston and you will get better results. To answer your question, there is no backwards to the impeller if installing a new one. If reinstalling an old one (tch-tch) the shaft turns clockwise and the blades trail back.
