I'm looking at the classic "it ran last year" motor. Problem is its an electric start and I'm a pull start kinda guy. Is there a way I can hook up direct to a battery to hear it run, check spark, compression ect?

Its a 1985 and I'm looking to pay $100-200 so at worst I could use it for parts I guess?

You could do some damage to the electrical system by doing your half-way hookup. If I were the seller, I wouldn't let you do it.

What if you bought a battery at Walmart to hookup to start it ..or at least crank it over for the compression tester. Worse case you return the battery for a refund. If the motor has good compression numbers it's a winner if the price is right. Imo.

Furthermore any seller whom doesn't have a way for you to test the engine with the resources they have probably won't care if you jump it.

If you get the controls for it just hook them up. Does it have tilt and trim if it does grab it worth the purchase price alone, The lower unit is also worth more than the purchase price.
