Does anyone know if these engines have a thermostat? The place that I brought the motor into for repair cannot figure this out. So far they have replaced the head gasket, I already replaced the impeller. They also replaced the impeller and housing as well and do not seem to know what to do from here. Any simple troubleshooting techniques would be greatly appreciated!

Go to www.sears.com, type in model number, and a few more cliks will bring a parts diagram up. The 15 hp has a thermostat.

Thermostat located under a square cover near exhaust ports on motor leg.

Thanks for the information re: the thermostat location. I found it in less than 5 seconds and had it removed in another 5 seconds. This is likely the cause of the overheating situation, I find it difficult to believe that the shop to where I took the motor could not locate this?

If your shop couldn't find that thermostat, it's time to find a new shop! :D

Re: Game Fisher (Force) 9.9 overheating

Bought a new thermostat during lunch, will install tonight. My next question is: I would like to run the engine in a barrel of water without the thermostat installed in order to purge the thermostat area of any particluates and ensure that there is no other blockage to be dealt with. Is there any concern in doing this for a short period(a few minutes maybe)?

I'm sure a couple of minutes running without the t-stat would be harmless. Some even dispose of it entirely, but I don't think that's such a 'hot' idea. ;)

If I were you, I would test the t-stat out of the engine to truly see if it is the problem before you find out that it is operating normally and overheat your engine.

An easy way to do this is to stick the t-stat in a pan of water on the stove with a cooking thermometer and turn on the heat. Watch for the t-stat to open and note at which temp this happens and that it has full travel.

If your t-stat is operating correctly, you have a different problem..

Thanks for the advice re: checking the T-stat while out of the engine. I took off the lower and upper leg last night and found some additional blockage where the water enters the engine block. In addition, the part called and 'insert' part number 819383 was removed as it was somewhat caked with salt even though I routinely run it with fresh water after ocean adventures. I am ordering one of these as well. If I use a garden hose, can I easily run water through the engine block without the engine running?
