After a long, good day of boating and fishing, loading the boat and traveling 6.5 miles down the road, my five year old son informs me that he left his $70 Gameboy Advanced sitting on the "boat thing", meaning the trailer toungue.

Of course I flipped out, since my kid's are lost without these baby sitters, but know little kids are prone to mistakes like this (so are adults).

I thought there was no chance of finding it intact, but turned around anyway and pulled over, to have him show me where he left it.

We looked at the tongue and there it sat, a perfect fit between the brackets for the tongue jack. We both felt much better :)

Kid's accessories are now part of the mental check list for boating.

Marty

Re: Gameboy Safe!

These Gameboy are unbeatable !! But if you go for long trips, I suggest one of these small 13" TV/VCR combo and few movies/cartoons to play........peace an quiet all the way :D
My 2 little ones (9 and 11) will get on each other after 10 miles from home, if I didn't have a TV/VCR....they would be on the side of the highway, by now.

Re: Gameboy Safe!

I have to admit our recent trip to FL was the most peacfull because of the electronic babysitter we had. My wife purchased a laptop which is about 3 years old from a young fellow she works with for $100.00 and i rigged up an invertor I took out of mom and dad's motorhome before we sold it to keep it charged/running as the battery only lasts maybe 2hrs (maybe more). We talk to our kids but they tend to start getting fidgity and then the "Stop touching me, leave me alone, Mom she's bothering me!" Start. I have to say it was the best $100 We have ever spent.

djohns19

Maybe times have not changed much at all.

I had a good father, but I remember him always telling (yelling at) us kids to be quiet in the car and sit still in the (aluminum boat).

On road trips we either looked out the window or fought with each other. (35 years ago).

Kids today live in a world of constant stimulation, so it's very difficult to get them to spend quiet time, especially sitting in a boat. I can get them to sit with a fishing pole for about 10 minutes.

They do end up enjoying the "fishing" trip, we do talk some and it works out OK.

Unfortunately, nothing is simple anymore.

Marty

Re: Gameboy Safe!

djohns19, we love to talk to our kids, but we travel a lot and they already know all the games and conversations you can have during a trip.
To avoid unpleasant journeys, few small electronics help a lot and makes trip enjoyable for all of us. I wonder too how our parents did make it without them... :D

I dont have any kids, but if i did i would talk to them.....dont make me stop this car.....i dont care if he hit you first.....if i hear one more peep......etc etc. My wife says if we have kids thier ears would be a foot long. Anyway I was at my brothers house after a good day of fishing, and he left a beer smack dab in the middle of the bow of my boat (unknown to me) and after i left his house i stopped at the gas station to fill up, and low and behold after 10 minutes of driving turning and stopping, the beer half full still perched on the bow like a it was a light house. It was still cold, so i drank it, filled up, went home. good day fishing.

I don't know about you guys but when I was a kid I was fascinated by the game technology. The kids are the same now but with much better equipment to play with. It improves their coordination and reflexes if nothing else. I took a friends kids out for a spin in our new Tolly, his little girl enjoyed the ride but his son played his Game Boy... the whole time... on the bridge, in the berth, at the table and I'm sure he played it in the biffy too. We almost had to head back early but we took the batteries out of my GPS for the game. hehe I'm not a big fan of electronic sitters but that was cute.

My father was a shipwright. He was the son of a lighthouse keeper who lived on the extremitys of our coast, my dad learn't patience the hard way!
We were all bought up with the same patience. We went fishing in dads home made 12' clinker dingy and sat many an hour being taught to, "watch the clouds change 100 times", or watch a ship come through the heads and get docked at the wharf. All taught with tender loving care. Today I find some of my best thinking is done when fishing or doing any number of things where patience is required.
Heck my best deer stalking has been done sitting on a hillside just taking a break, 50% of my kills were sighted that way. My children have learnt this skill and utilise it well.
Likes too short to live it so fast!
Ross

Re: Gameboy Safe!

I took my three boys out fluking one day that was a little bumpy, nothing crazy. They thought it would be fun to bring the gameboys and play between fish so I said it was fine. My kids have never been seasick but as soon as they started playing the games all three got sick. As soon as they were done, and the gameboys were put away, they felt a better and decided to stick to fishing. Now it's a running joke when we go fishing, no gameboys, kind of like leaving bananas home!

Re: Gameboy Safe!

Reading some of these stories reminds me of a road trip my family took when I was a kid. There were 4 of us kids in the back of the Old Mans Ford Counrty Squire. He stoped at Micky Dees for burgers and fries to go which was a rare treat. Two of my younger brothers got into a fight over a couple of fries. My father (an ex Marine Sarg.)pulled over without a word, collected all the food, rolled down a window and tossed it out. The only words he said after that were "the next contestants will follow the food out of the window". Man that was one quite trip.

Ross J
Great story...

Storm, FUNNY, reminds me of the time i threw my brothers shoe out the window (He touched me) and a rather long trip in the Rambler with no a/c. I spent 2 hours on the side of the road looking for the shoe. Never did find tha darn thing.

I Told You to stay Off The ramp... get boat in water...ok everybody in you sit there and you sit there..no you can't drive the boat yet... get to the quiet spot.. worms on hook everybodys ok...daddy my line got a knot... how come the fish aren't bitting... well sweetheart you just have to wait...can you cast my line out again dad?... I have anouther knot...ok hang on..don't put your pole down...everyone back in the water..I have to go pee(little girl)cripes...can we try a different spot? LOOK I TOLD YOU TO HAVE SOME PAITENCE AND WAIT, the fish will bite hang it over the side and be quiet. I still have not figured out who needs to learn more paitence me or the kids. Any comments? :D

Never did try the gameboy and most likely won't just the way I was raised.
