A little while ago, I picked up a GameFisher 3.5hp. (Don't know what year.) It ran great for the summer but is now exhbiting strange behavior.

I pull the choke all of the way out and it starts fine. Then I push the choke all of the way back and it runs fine for a couple of minutes, then it starts to die. If I pull the choke back out, it will keep the motor running and I can slowly push the choke knob back in about 2/3 to 3/4 but if I put the choke in all of the way then it will surge and die.

I figure it won't hurt to put a new spark plug in but am not sure what plug this motor uses. The model number on the motor is 642-31.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Gamefisher 3.5hp spark plug and weird running

Welcome to Iboats, flyingduck!

Try to find the serial/model number so we can get an exact year. The 642-31 is a Tecumseh number, which isn't unusual because the outboard company Eska bought Tecumseh engines, put them on their outboards, and sold them to Sears (Gamefisher name). :)

I think the 642-31 was only used in 1980. If that's the case it ought to have a "Twist Grip" throttle. That engine uses Champion RJ13Y gapped at .030". RJ14YC might be a little easier to find, and "close enough" according to Champion (who can be dubious sometimes).

If it won't run without the choke applied though, likely one of the small fuel passages in the carb is clogged - probably the idle enrichment passage. Best to take it apart, clean and rebuild it with a new kit.

Thanks for the plug info. I guess it must be a 1980 then because it does have the twist throttle on the tiller.

Any hints on what's causing the weird running behavior?

Maybe I'll run some carb cleaner through it before taking it apart for a rebuild.

Run Sea Foam in the fuel at a higher ratio than recommended and let it idle through for a while.Save some and after it is warmed up pour a little in the spark plug hole ,put the plug back in ,have a beer or two and then fire it up again.Charlie

Does Sea Foam come in a liquid form? I have an aerosol can that I use to clean out my RX-7 every now and then.

Yes and it is easier to find than the aerosol.NAPA carries it.

I found some liquid Sea Foam today at my local auto parts store. The only remaining question is what brand of beer is best?

Thanks for your help. I'll give it a go this weekend and report back.
