I just picked up a 3 hp gamefisher on ebay. As always, "buy at your own risk". Problem:

Motor starts on first or second pull, but when i accelerate throttle, just as the gear engages, weird noise comes from what appears to be clutch assembly and prop stops spining. This is a "direct drive". Dont know much about. Could it possibly be a berring thats busted?

Also, how can i tell what year it is?

Any suggestions would really be helpful.

Cs in Miami

If it is direct drive the prop hub may be slipping.A prop shop may be able to install a new hub.If you mark the hub and run the motor you
can tell if the hub is slipping in the prop.
If you have some mechanical ability
The gearcase is pretty simple take a look inside.

Tried that...prop is fine...hub not broken.
Once the engine is warm, its stays on idle fine, but as i try to accelorate, something in the clutch assembly makes a weird noise and the engine bogs down, as if to turn off. If i return to idle, engine stays on. My guess is either the gear box or a ball bearing in the clutch assembly????

Any input will help..this is the first time i have a "direct drive" motor.
