Hello... I recently was given an older Sears Gamefisher 5 hp motor to use as a spare on my boat. It is model number 217-586612. This motor has had very little use, but the water pump doesn't seem to be working. I figured I'd check it out and replace it if need be. I'm having trouble figuring out how to get to it though. It looks like I'd need to drop the gear housing to get access, but the only two nuts I've found there still don't let me remove the housing. One side of the housing loosens, but the other is still tight. I'm obviously missing something, so any help from out there will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

After removing the two nuts, there's a little rectangular plate on side with two philips head screws. remove them and there's a bolt (8mm, maybe 10mm) that needs to be removed. It's the shift linkage horsefly mentioned. After that you have to finaggle the foot off. Usually the driveshaft is a little hesitant to come out. The impellar is inside the housing and is mounted on driveshaft secured with a small key. Don't lose the key, I don't know for sure if new impeller comes with a new one. Have fun!!!
