Hello all,
I am new to the forum (and to outboard repair for that matter) My grandfather gave me his Sears Gamefisher and it hadn't been run for years. I am guessing it is from the mid 80's model - 217.586752 Tecumseh motor. I pulled the powerhead apart, just to inspect everything...put it back together with new gaskets. 110 psi. compression and a new plug. Mixed some fresh gas and gave it a try. The motor starts and runs...but it seems like if I don't keep my hand squeezing the primer ball on the fuel line it will sputter out after a minute or so. The motor also runs rough when it is running (loud and shakey - and I know these motors are the smoothest or cleanest runners bc I have used it when it ran well - but this is obviously misbehaving.) There is a light mist coming from the coolant holes - so I wonder if it needs an impeller as well. Could a bad impeller cause the motor to run poorly? My first instinct tells me no - but I am really new to this. My first guess is that the carb is out of wack...is it worth rebuilding? Any thoughts would be helpful. The motor frustrates me but it also makes me want to figure it out. I also have an even older Gamfisher from gramps that sorta runs, but that is for another day. Thanks - and this is a wonderful resource for amatuers like myself to learn!

Re: Gamefisher 7.5

clean the carb, lite mist is all your gonna get from the exhaust holes. you can find parts on ebay along with a repair manual. i have one and yours is a 77-79 model according to your ser#.need any help let me know. ive been working with mine for a couple months and once you get the kinks out they are not bad motors and run well. the fuel pressure works on 2 p.s.i from the diaphram and fuel cap. if the pump diaphram is bad or the cap is rotted out on the inside your best bet is to get a can and a female adapter and run gas from it. your can should have a pop-up vent on the cap to equalize the line pressure so your motor runs smooth.

There is a fuel pump element in the carb mount flange. They are a weak link.
need replacement often. Also can be problematic if not installed right.

Re: Gamefisher 7.5

Ok, I have replaced the fuel pump element with a brand new one. (how could this get installed wrong? it seems like it can only go in one way...maybe I am missing something and put it in wrong?)
I was still having the issue with having to prime the bulb every minute or so to keep it running - so I decided to experiment. I mounted the older Gamefisher directly next to the one I am trying to fix, and since it has the gas tank on top old motor), I ran the line from the old motor's gas tank to the newer motor's carb... The motor would run fine without stalling at this point but it still runs extemely rough and idles really high. I can hear it run smooth for a second and then it goes back into the jitters and shakes while it idles. If I put it into drive in the tank, it sputters, then kicks into good power for half a second and the back to sputters... I dunno...I have a good mind to put a new carb on there...maybe a lawnmower shop will have one I can use. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

Re: Gamefisher 7.5

The ridge or line on the element goes at a 45 degree angle.Top between 1 and 2 oclock.
