I have a 1982 Gamefisher 9.9 outboard. I recently installed a carb kit. The motor runs, and will idle for some time. But, gas shoots out of a small hole in the carb while running and it then procedes to die. Tried to adjust the float in different postions, but it will just keep running a while then it will kill. Any ideas about whats wrong?

Probably a bad viton seat causing fuel to bypass the needle and seat valve. You need a new one, and you have to install it correctly. Common problem on those.

Need more info.
How long have you had the motor? Did you recently buy it used? Why did you re-kit the carb? Did it run right before installing the carb kit? If not what were the symptoms? Do you have a shop manual to follow when working on the motor? Did the carb kit include a new float needle and seat? Did you install the seat with the right orientation? Did you check the float to be sure it wasn't fuel logged? Are you absolutely certain that you re-installed the float right side up? The tang on the float that pushes the needle shut should have a witness mark from wear on the tang where the needle touches it to verify that the float has been re-installed correctly. If you can see that witness mark with the float installed when you hold the carb upside down before installing the float bowl the float is not installed correctly!
Have you pulled the plugs to see if they are either too wet or too dry?

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 carb issue

Yes the motor did run before the carb kit. I installed it because i had the same issue before the carb kit was installed. All i got in the kit was new gaskets, a new fuel pump element, and a new needle seat for the float. The motor sat up for a year before i tried to run it, it ran perfect before that, no problems at all. I figured cleaning the carb with cleaner would help it run better, but it doesnt seem so at all.
I am not sure what a viton seat is though? But the float is on correctly, and there is no gas inside the float. Also, the plugs have a very weak spark. Too weak to see, but it does start.

Oh no here we go again,
Old plugs? if not, before anyone here convinces you that your CDI is bad post your model no. and think about cleaning up all the wiring contacts back to the Stator and be sure to ground that plug when you check for spark, theres lots of youtube videos on checking Stators using an Ohm meter,

The viton seat is the small round rubberish thingy with a hole in the middle like a dougnut that the float needle seat's against to seal the incoming gas once the float bowel is full, Get a manual :)

The plugs are brand new, i was maybe thinking a bad ingition coil. Ill check the carb for the viton seal, pretty sure i got one in the carb kit i ordered.

Mrcrabs' "Oh no--here we go again" was in reference to the CDI ignition on that model. In short the repair parts are no longer available on a practical basis.
So take his suggestions to heart and try to eliminate all other possibilities but prepare yourself mentally in the meantime to discover that the ignition system is beyond redemption on a budget only slightly smaller than that of a major national power.

Go back thru the past posts and read all that mourn of poor spark or running problems on the 9.9 & 15 horse Eskas. Keep a crying towel handy.:(
