I have a friend that has an older gamefisher 7.5. Maybe late 70's? If these motors are air cooled, do they also have an impeller? And if so, is there an obvious pee hole? thx

You gotta post a model number. Unless you see a tube by the prop, whose open end is pointed forward, you have an impeller. That motor needs the pump output to cool the bottom end of the engine. The fins only cool the top end. Poke around the transom clamp and see if you don't find a number like 217.xxxxxx. If you don't see it there, look at the bottom half shroud on the starboard side, there may be a sticker with the model #. Then you can go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action and do a model # search, and see exploded views and get part numbers. Put an impeller in it, you don't need a dead engine over this. Also, pay attention to whether you have a points motor or one of the Solid State Ignitions. If it's an SSI, DO NOT yank the starter cord without grounding that plug. If the spark energy has no place to go, you can barbeque the ignition, and trust me, you don't want any of that.

Sounds like an Eska designed outboard, does the engine look like a lawnmower engine with a finned cylinder? If yes, the impeller cools the exhaust, and yes it's needed. There are a couple of holes above the prop in the leg, exhaust relief holes, that will lightly spray water when the outboard is running. There is no tell-tale (IE: pizzer).

thx for the info. I'll see him at work tomorrow. Today he told me it was a 1969 ted williams 7.5. Where can he buy an impeller? points and coils all the neccessary stuff? I've only dealt with the OMC's.
