I originally tried posting this question on my yahoo eska group but kept getting a error .Thanks for any help

Hi, I am new to the group and have a 7.5 gamefisher with the troublesome solid state ignition. I followed the instructions for the cap/diode replacement but still have weak or no spark.The engine will run for a couple of minutes then start skipping then die. No restart unless it cools down,during this time I loose the spark completely. I am wondering if the scr maybe getting hot then failing. My question is can the scr be bypassed on the board as well with a outside unit ? I have looked at the recommended websites for ignition information but have not found this repair being done.The motor ran very well last year but has been dieing more often and now it just wont hardly run. I have checked the wiring for chaffed areas also with no luck.

I found my answer it looks possible to replace all the electronics but is major surgery on the board . I will try it nothing to lose

That's a tough one, right there. Heat driven ignition failures can be anything from the scr to the coil. I wonder if you set the thing up in a trash can full of water, and hit the pulse transformer with a hair dryer, got it up to maybe 180 F, then see if it loses spark. That could sure save a lot of de-potting on that board if you could isolate what is crapping out with heat. Cold solder joints can do it to ya, too.

Ed thinks cheap chinese caps cause problems, even if they check good. However I built 6 cap diode modules with chinese 630v to 250v caps and they all worked great off of the same jumperd 7.5 SSI I got from some guy named fred garvin...therefore I'm not convinced that its a chinese ploy to destroy American made outboard ignitions.
by the way what voltage cap did you use and where did you get it? just asking to add to the mrcrabs database.

I recommend highly check your ground lug on the bottom of the ssi module ( losen & re tighten) because this sure sounds like grounding issue to me. I see more of that than dead caps and from what I have seen the SCR either works or it don't. rule of thumb if it fires or has weak fire its not the SCR.
I have seen dead caps come back to full working order when the ignition is spun at high rpm...they burn through the short and all is well again, go figure...???
