Gamefisher smokes way to much

I was given a 1987 15HP Gamefisher and was able to get it running. It runs great but smokes like crazy. The gas to oil ratio for this motor is 50:1 as far as I can determine and that is what I am using. I use the same gas tank (same fuel) with another 50:1 engine, an Evinrude, and it does not smoke excessively.

Is there anything mechanical that could cause excessive smoking, or is it only an issue of too much oil in the gas?

Running on muffs or especially in a barrel make smoke seem more excessive.
If the choke is not opening all the way,or the float is not closing or adjusted wrong,if the fuel pump diaphram has a hole in it,if the idle mixture is adjusted wrong, these all could cause excess smoke. One plug will be more fouled than the other if the diaphram is leaking.

Re: Gamefisher smokes way to much

Explain smokes too much, testing on land, at start up, idling, WOT on the water.

I have a late 80's 7.5HP (de-tuned 15HP) Gamefisher/Force and it smokes a lot at start-up, but wind it out and the smoke isn't bad, even after running hard and then idling down it doesn't smoke bad. You could do a de-carb (search forums for procedure) which will help clean up the combustion chambers,,, you will see some bad smoking during the decarb (neighbors will think the house is on fire :D )

On what ST said, I had to install a fuel pump kit in my Gamefisher as it was hardened, 20 years and ethanol fuel isn't kind to those old rubber parts.

Also make sure you are getting spark on both cylinders, and both plugs are firing. I had a dead BIM coil and the outboard seemed to run fine while testing, but gutless on the water, it was only running on 1 cylinder. I don't think you have this problem and it's not going to make the outboard smoke any more or less, from what I experienced. But, it's something to check and takes all of 2 minutes to see if both cylinders are firing,,, I've heard others report dead coils in these outboards. Pull and ground a plug wire and see if the outboard starts, reconnect that plug wire and do the same for the other plug wire. If it will not run on 1 cylinder, you have a problem with that cylinder, bad coil, spark plug, (points/condenser if equipped), mechanical....

A compression test wouldn't hurt either.

You may have a gummed up carb that needs to be gone through...thoroughly cleaning all the tiny passages. As mentioned, check spark too. Sounds like lots of unburned fuel!

Re: Gamefisher smokes way to much

Thanks for all the tips. I haven't had the motor on a boat since I got it running, but I have ran it at some speed in the barrel for as long as 15 minutes at a time and don't notice much reduction in smoke. I have a couple of other older Evinrudes, a 1971 6HP and a 1978 15HP that don't smoke much at all when running on the same fuel. And in the same barrel. As to how much, it looks like mosquito control is fogging the area. My wife said she would be embarassed to go out on the boat with it smoking that way. I know that has pros and cons, but I really want to stop the smoking. I will check the things you have all mentioned out this weekend, including putting it on the boat and running it wide open for a bit. Any further suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
