Re: Garden Hose Water

Anything above a fast idle can be very dangerous to the powerhead. If the motor is run up at a continous speed the motor can "run away" creating havoc on the rod bolts. A quick snap of the throttle may be o.k. but I don't recommend it as that will be the time that something goes wrong. The choice is yours.

Please explain the term "run away" as in motor on muffs and what can all go wrong if running on hose above normal idle.
I suppose that same does not apply to revving motor when hanging in water because of back preasure?
Thanks
D

I use a plastic garbage pail to flush my 40 4 cyl.
With the small to midrange motors it's better I believe.
I rev it & even knock it in gear.
I allways thought " run away " would be the result of putting the motor in gear without a load ? Maybe I'm wrong..

Lets put it this way, would you put your car in neutral and hold the gas pedal on the floor? There is no load on the engine and it will come apart. As O/B Tech says, a quick blip of the throttle is ok. Sustained high revs with no load can create extra parts.

O/B tech is right. I have had it happen to me.You think the engine is going to come apart right in front of your eyes.I got lucky and didn't do any damage but it ran more than wide open on its own for about five minutes.
