I am looking to buy a gps/chartplotter and narrowed it down to a garmin 182C or 188C. I have a furuno fish finder that works well but I don't know if since I am spending the money should I just bite the bullet and get the combo 188C. Does any one have any advise for me. Thank's

Re: Garmin 182C or 188C

Lot of Garmin fans here. I found a link that complained of screen coating coming/washing off. Changed my mind on the 188C. Guess it comes with warning about fingerprint oils. Talked with guys in electronics booth at the boat show and they told me, I can't be too specific, but something to the effect of Garmin's screens being plastic coated and all others are some king of glass(?) coated. But they agreed Garmins screens could be improved upon.

Have you looked at the $500 5" Navman? Offering $175 rebate.

For the same money as the Garmin you could get the 6" Si-Tex, very viewable, takes the new "Max" cartridges too.............

Thank's luna sea. I have heard about the screens. Everyone I have talked to tells me to buy a garmin. I will have to check out the Navman.

What ever you decide about your GPS needs, I suggest keeping that Furuno ff. If you want to replace the ff, replace it with another Furuno unit.

Spykept, do some searching here on iboats. I just typed in "Garmin 188C" and got these.....

Garmin 188C iboats

Try "Furuno" and "fishfinders" as well, I got a stack of reading mat'l at home from this site.

Furuno is one of the best fishfinders, I'd say the best if not for the new Raymarine HDFI fishfinders. This is the second year I've been talked out of buying a Furuno at the boatshow. I brought my sunglasses this year and you could see the Raymarine's clearer, whether this is a good test is still to be determined.

The same guys told me the Garmin 188C's fishfinder's a "toy" compared to the Raymarine. I have to assume it's got the same features as the 320C, which is a popular unit.

I'll be buying probably the Raymarine as soon as I get my tax refund, unless someone can convince me of a combo unit that serves both functions well. And doesn't have any known problems.

Heck even the Raymarine has some fogging issues....

PS Fueled up at Chicks Marine last year on the way down from Georgetown Island, where I picked up the Grady. Also have a friend in K'Port. Spent some time at the Pilot house last summer. Did the Lobster fest too. Your boat in the harbor there?

Good Luck with the new toys! :D

Luna thanks, I am going to keep my furuno and just get a gps. My furuno screen is hard to see also. I think thy all have that problem. Also I have been to the pilot house many of times. K'port
is a great place to live. I don't keep my boat in the port. It cost to much money.

Keep the Furuno and add the 182C. That will give you the best of both.

Throw the Garmin 178c into your consideration! Cheaper than the 188, better color and more tracks!!
