i recently purchased a garmin 178c chartplotter/sounder and couldnt be happier with the thing. It has "bluechart" technology but the unit did not come with a card. from what ive seen of the technology it looks like a must have for any fisherman and with a pricetag of about $170 (just for one card/area, in my case S.W. Florida) it seems worth the price. has anyone used the "bluechart" system,? is it worth the money? do you know where to get a deal on them? overall feelings, comments or advice?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Re: garmin

I have a Garmin 276C, kalla man. It came with a 128M card in it. I later purchased a 512M card (blank).

"Bluechart" is a trademark name that Garmin's Mapsource uses for salt water charts.

I don't do salt any more, but use Mapsource products in my 276C. I buy the CDs and use my PC to put together the maps I want to use, then download them into the unit.

I recommend buying blank cards and CDs over buying preprogrammed cards. eBay is a good source for either or both.

Re: garmin

I have a 176C (portable capabilites w/batteries) and I use the Blue Chart chip for Puget Sound and I think it is great. Boaters World did carry them, don't know about now. I had mine for about 5 years now and works great.
I bought mine from GPSDISCOUNT.COM Edmond, OK 73034. I think it was about $125.00
