Garmin - broken temp

I have a Garmin 240 -- it's actually my 2nd one; first one leaked & got water in it, but that's another story... anyway, i have the transom mount transducer w/temp & it's acting wierd. The transducer is about 3 years old; the Garmin unit is a replacement for the one that leaked and is about 2 years old. Symptom is temp seems to read fine when i first turn it on, but after 30 minutes or so, it reads absurd temps like 150+ ferenheit when I know the water is in the 50's. It's not flat offset though, sometimes it'll read 130s, others 140's, I've seen as high as upper 150's & vaguely recall seeing a 170 something once. Before I replace the transducer, has anyone else seen this & if so, did it turn out to be the transducer, the depth finder or wiring in between? I have noticed some mild corrosion on a few of the female pins on the transducer cable (the part that connects to the DF. It appears as a light greenish corrosion around the edges of the holes, but doesn't appear to be inside, so I think it's getting a good connection.

Well, I hate to be the one to have to tell you this but you are going to need to get a new transducer. The temperatue sensor in them go bad all the time and there are only a few transducers that give you the ability to just fix the temperature. The thermistor, I believe its called, takes a dump and that's all she wrote. You's is exhibiting the classic signs. I'll bet it started doing it about 3 trips ago too, but not going up so high and then dropping back down too, didn't it?

If by some chance you are using something like an Airmar B66 then you can get a replacement centerplug for it that has a Y-cable as part of it. You just replaced the center section, run the new cable almost to the fishfinder. Then you plug the existing transducer cable into the Y-cable and the third leg into the fish finder. Its an less expensive way to take care of the problem if you can do it. The replacement center section cost right at $90 as I recall for the last one I bought (which I sold on E-Bay for around $40 as I recall).

The other option is to put in a separate temperature sensor. I just stuck on of them in my boat because I went to a new very high performance shoot thru transducer. It didn't have temperature so I bought a separate sensor and Y-cable. It ran me right at $225. Nothing to putting it in, just a 2" hole and bolt it down. No fairing of course and its very low profile, sticking out maybe 3/8" alltogether. That's temperature and Speed by the way, and the bronze version, not the plastic one which is considerably less expensive. Oh, my stuff is Furuno, but Airmar makes all the same stuff with Garmin plugs too.

Thom
