Garmin GPS chartplotter - Which one?

I'm wanting a depth sounder for the boat. Figure that's gonna run me $100. SO why not go ahead and get a sounder built into a GPS unit.

Well my pontoon dash is set up to hold a Garmin 421, 431 ect.

So what's the difference between the 421 and the 431? I know I need the "S" version because that is the sonar version.

Does anyone else run one of these models? What can you tell me good or bad?

Did you purchase the inland lake charts to put into it? Is it worth it to purchase the extra maps?

I will sometimes be using it on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. I want something to keep me in the channel and know where I'm at.

The 421 has Coastal maps and the 431 has inland lake maps.

No need to buy addtional maps. Everything comes pre-loaded on the machine

I have been needing something like this. Is there a way to get a "budget" model?

I don't need color, just maps of the bottom contours so I can stay in the channels in my lake.

Currently using handheld Magellan but it only has contours for land, and just blue water.

My bo bo.

The "base map" on mine include everything but Vision. I didn't think sell a stripped down version anymore but obviously they do as you pointed out.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks! I've seen reference to that but no where does it really come out and say that.

So if I'm thinking correctly..... If you buy the 421 then you must purchase the inland lake maps, thus making the 421 a 431......????
