I recently bought a boat with a 1990 evinrude xp150 on it, and put the 150hp on my speedboat. Just as a sidenote, it didn't have spark when I got it, then randomly got spark again, and I had it running great, and now no spark again. I'm not worried about spark though, what I am worried about is when I tried to start it yesterday i noticed that when you turned it over little air/gas bubbles came out of the main seal, the on that is down the center of the crank. So I'm assuming its bad. Is it ok to run as is? How much $ approximately to replace all seals in the motor? Anyone else had this done? Thanks

You may be talking about the seam that is the mating surface for the two crankcase halves. That surface does not actually use a seal, per se, but a special type of gel sealant. Usually this sealant lasts for many, many years. I suppose it's possible that your is leaking at that point. Inside that area will be alternating compression/suction, so it could bubble if the gel seal has deteriorated. That seal will be a problem. A leak at that point will degrade the performance of that immediate cylinder. (or others if the gel seal is leaking in other places.)
My guess is that if you have one leak point, you may have others. To repair, you'll have to take the powerhead off, strip it and split the two halves of the powerhead in order to redo the gel seal.

Oh, and one more thing, I got it started, and whenever it coughed it blew blue smoke out that seal. I shut it down right away.

Any evidence of this motor having been apart before.--Any warranty on this motor from the seller ? ----If you can not do the work yourself you are easily looking at $1000.00 for " skilled service " charges.-Plus parts.----There is no telling what you may find when motor is taken apart and cost could easily double if major parts need to be replaced.

Would make me wonder if the prior owner rebuilt the powerhead and used regular gasket sealer instead of the special gel seal.....

Doesn't look at all like it was taken apart before. No warranty paid $1000 for the whole setup. Almost 100% sure it hasn't been rebuilt. If it was under a 50hp I could do it, but I don't want to take on a big v6.

Try the cheap way. Clean all the paint off of it down to the bear metal. Then use Marine-Tex or JB Weld to patch it.

I brought it to a good friend last night who is a certified evinrude mechanic, with 25 yrs of experience. Taking the powerhead off and splitting the crank is a bit much for me. But he looked at it and said that he thinks it is the intake cover leaking. The intake cover is about 1/4" away from the crank seal so it apparently just looked like the crank seal was leaking... he is going to call me today and let me know what is actually leaking. If he finds it is the crank seal I will try to in weld it. I will post what he finds, thanks all.

Posting pictures always helps in identifying leaks.-------Verbal description can be very confusing !-----Very few would call the crankase joint a " main seal " ----Just my opinion.
