Gas back through oil line on 1989 70

I have a 1989 70, and the previous owner had disconnected the VRO by capping the oil pipe inlet on the outside of the cowling. Yesterday, when I squeezed the primer bulb, I noticed a drip of gas coming from the fuel connection area. After further investigation, it's not coming from the gas line, but rather from the (capped) oil line. The motor fitting for the oil line looks like it's a silver pipe pressed into a black casting, and the drip seems to be coming from where the pipe joins the casting. There doesn't seem to be anything dripping at the fuel or oil line connections where the rubber lines meet the fitting inside the cowling.

So I assume I have a small crack in the oil fitting, and I can probably just plug the oil line upstream of that fitting. My question is how gas can make it back to that point? Do I have another problem like a leaky fuel pump diaphraghm? Something else?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
