With the weather breaking some, Im finally getting to check out all of the things on my new (to me) 1986 Sylvan Deluxe 24' pontoon. This boat has the gas tanks and batteries that sit behind the rear wall on a small platforms, with the motor in the middle. The previous owner built locking storage boxes for theft protection. After I paint them, the will look pretty good. My question is this....He has a gas tank and battery in each one. One box has the engine starting battery with gas tank, and the other one has the deep cycle battery for accessories and the spare gas tank. Is this safe, or should I move them to wear the batteries and tanks are stored in the same compartment.

u know i wouldnt think it was safe. mainly cause sometimes sparks can come from the connections or they get hot due to malfucntion or it just happens and can ignite fumes so either way i wouldnt do that

Separate them.
I had a battery explode in my face once thanks to a metal timing light which arced to the battery. The timing light was promptly replaced with an inductive plastic housing model.

Re: Gas/Battery Storage Boxes

really depends how much ventilation there is on the box. also the batteries need to be in Battery Boxes, not open. batteries and fuel tanks are next to each other on most outboards.

on my toon, i have a 27 gallon tank on the port tube, and a 6 gallon and 2 batteries on the starboard tube. it does make it a little stern heavy, with a full load of fuel (200lbs)

I moved my batteries forward in front of the rear partition, and placed them under the back seat, to get the weight a little more forward.

you need have your boxes to be vented well, batteries give of explosive gasses when charging i wouldn't worry about them being in the same compartment. on my boat the battery, engine, and on board gas tank are all in the same compartment but it has a ventilation blower

Re: Gas/Battery Storage Boxes

There is plenty of ventilation on the boxes. The side of the of the box that faces the wall is wide open and can get plenty of air. Its just a 3 sided box that is locked to protect from theft. Im still going to change it when it warms up some. Thanks for the advice, and Im going to have plenty more questions later on. If I could figure out how to post some pics, I would. This is a great forum!!!!

Re: Gas/Battery Storage Boxes

I have both of my batteries in battery boxes and they sit in the same compartment as my 18 gallon fuel tank. As long as you have adequate ventilation for both you will be fine.
