If I am not really careful when filling the gas tank at a gas station or marina
a large amount will burp up from the tank a go all over the place. There is a small "thingy" near the fill cap that may be a breather but I don't know if I am supposed to twist it or pull it out to get it to work. Any help on avoiding this
spillage?

Yes, the 'thingy' near the gas cap is probably the fuel tank vent fitting. It should always be open and there's no 'on/off' function. It should contain a small screen that faces down and to the rear. If you see any debris over the screen, get it off.
Try to estimate how much gas you need to fill up, then watch the pump and SLOW DOWN the flow about 5 gallons before you think it's full. It's a good idea to have a small catch pan below the vent just in case it burps- or when the tank is full. I use an old water bottle with the top cut off.
If it burps gas without the tank being completely full then you may have a blockage in the vent line. Assuming the vent screen is clear, you've got to get access to the vent fitting from inside the hull. Loosen the gas cap, then take the vent line off the fitting and blow out both the fitting and the line (use low pressure compressed air). You should hear bubbling when blowing the line back to the tank.

Re-connect and give her another try at the gas pump. Good luck.

Good tip !

I do not see any sort of vent on my 1999 Stingray 190 rx.....I will have to look harder to try and find it as I have had the same problem once before.

I just slow down on the filling as described earlier.

There's not one to find. It's vented somehow through the filler hole. You just have to pump very slowly. Enjoy.
