is it safe to carry an extra gas can (5gal.) on the boat?

maybe even one of those metal military cans?

If I go out on a big lake or plan on camping.

Yes, it's safe...providing you take the normal precautions and use common sense. Left in the sun, gas will expand, so leave a little room and ventilate properly.

From my house, we frequently make long cruises that require extra fuel.

I leave room for expansion and store it on the front deck outside the rails.

Just don't store it in unventalated areas such as under the seat.

If space permits, you could also store on the transom with a bungee cord.

There are new rules about how to store / transport fuel and the fuel containers themselves. A legal container will have a federal approval stamp.
