Does anyone know if it is legal in new jersey to have a portable plastic fuel can from home depot on a center console boat? I have a 9 gallon above deck moeller tank but want to carry a few extra gallons.

Never heard or seen anything like that being illegal (anywhere). ..... However it has been more than 30 years since I moved away from Jersey so my knowledge is not up to date.

Needs to be USCG approved. Get another moeller tank. A jerry can is not approved

^^^ Excatly and why would you want to transfer fuel on a boat ,think fire, when you can just switch one end of the hose to the other tank with the same capacity as a "portable fuel can".

I agree with mr. 88. I used to carry an extra 5 gallon gas can with me when I had smaller boats. Long story short, it was much better and safer after I replaced it with another 6 gallon portable marine tank.

Same thing here. The 5 gallon didn't fit anywhere and the 2nd Moeller tank fit beside the original metal tank. And I have an extra gallon of gas now.

Can you store a portable jerry can above deck? Yes, you absolutely can, provided it is certified as a portable gasoline storage device. So basically, any red gas can you buy from a box store, auto parts store, or marine store will suffice.
