Gas coming out vent jet??? Sea Foam related????

Yesterday after getting thru the no wake zone, when I hit the throttle the motor just stumbled all over the place. It;s a 79 Mariner, 115 hp, ser #5255071 with cd ignition.

The boat would run fineat low rpm but as soon as I tried to open the throttle all I got was hesitation. Noticed a strong gas odor and took off the cover. A steady stream of fuel was squirting out of the vent jet on #3 card. To me it obviously was a stuck float. Tapped the bowl a few times and the gas squirting stopped. I still noticed a steady drip of fuel coming out the throat of this carb. Still had no top end power.

I had added a can of sea foam to my previous tank of gas and was impressed with how much smoother the engine ran. Now I'm wondering if the sea foam dislodged something that is stuck in my #3carb.

Any ideas or suggestions?? ANd thanks for all the great advice here.

Thank you. I was planning on rebuilding them this winter. However, I took some time today and removed the float cover to see if any dirt was in the needle valve. Also lifted the float out and it seemed OK. Blew everything out and put it back together.

Now it will run fine on muffs in the driveway - at least it isn't spitting gas out all over the place. Hopefully I'll get a chance later this week to put er in the water and test her at high RPM's. I'm optimistic maybe I can get her out a couple more times before it's time to call it quits here in Pennsylvania. Then I'll have time to sit at the bench and work on the carbs after winterizing.

Thought I'd post the results. After removing the float cover and blowing it out, put the boar in the water and she runs fine. No more hesitation when I hit the throttle. She just up and goes like she used to. :)

However, on returning to the dock, now I have a problem at idle. She won't idle below 1100 rpm. Supposed to idle at 600 and she used to do that.

I still have to wonder if adding sea foam to my previous tank of gas has loosened some crud that is causing me these problems. Not knocking the sea foam. The motor ran better on the tank of gas it was added to. Just don't like these possible after effects.

The SeaFoam is doing it's job. What kind of fuel tank do you have? Do you have fuel/water seperator filter? If so may be time for a new filter also. Change the filter on the engine. If your carbs were that bad, then they obviously needed cleaning and rebuilt as indicated above.
