I' have been trying to get my 72' 4hp evinrude running, I took off the exhaust plate, when i try and start it gas shoots out of the exhaust. The motor has spark, because this gas has caught on fire before. I took apart the carb and cleaned out, and the float needle isnt stuck. Why is there so much gas comming out.

float needle may not be adjusted correctly, flooding the cylinders. also those motor are not the most efficient, in burning fuel. they waste a good part of it out the exhaust.

There have been a number of people asking about the same kind of problem.Im going to blame ethonol gas.It has a devistating effect on the older rubber parts. In this case,I would bet the fuelpump diaphram is getting eaten up ,therby leaking into the engine via the pulse port on back of the pump.Remove the pump, leave all fuel lines attached ,apply heavy pressure to the pump by squeezing the ball, you may see the fuel pour out the little hole on reverse side.that will confirm. You should be able to get a rebuild kit.Avoid ethonol .
