gas evaporation

With gas being so pricey, I was wondering how much gas I'm losing to evaporation? I have a 6 gallon plastic tank that I leave in the boat with the vent open a little so it doesn't turn into a big pumpkin. Boat gets hot sitting in sun all day. Would it make much of difference if I took it out after use and store in cooler area and close vent a little?

Re: gas evaporation

it would help, and would also help the quality of the gas you are running thur your motor.

Re: gas evaporation

Those gas tanks are designed to withstand the vapor pressure of gasoline (which should not exceed about 9 psi at 100F for summer gas in non-metropolitan areas.......it's 7psi in Ca......AVGAS by the way is also 7psi)

Just keep it covered or out of the sun and leave the cap tight... quality of gasoline has nothing to do with vapor pressure.....If you leave the cap loose, the "higher ends" will evaporate out quicker and the gas goes "bad" faster.

Cheers,

Rick
