While out last week on the boat (1987 16' StarCraft Medalist), the gas gauge just quit on me --went from 3/4 of a tank to nothing in a second.

The tank is built-in. Where do I start looking?

Re: Gas gauge on the fritz

1 start at the dash making sure you have 12V at the gauge with the key in the "on" position
2 if 12V present, use a jumper from the neg battery to the sender lead on the gauge, normally pink wire.
should see full scale reading
3 locate sender at tank, using the same jumper , touch the center lead(pink wire) , should see full scale
(wiring from gauge to tank is good ,if no reading wiring to tank is bad)
4 using the jumper touch the black wire or the tank itself ,should see partial reading depending in tank level ,no reading may be a bad sender ,partial reading is sender ok and neg wire to tank is bad.
