gas gauge or sending unit ?

hi everyone , with the key off the gauge reads empty , with the key on it reads full , but it will not move off full ,i took the sending unit out of the tank and moved the float up and down , the gauge will move up and down then , i am not sure if it is the gauge or a bad ground some where , any ideas ? thanks

Chances are the float arm was stuck on the side of the tank. If the gauge tracks the movement of the arm the system is working.

Could be that your grounded out somewhere too. If you go to test your sender you ground the wires and it pegs the gauge to full. So you may just be grounding out somewhere.

Look for a thread that addresses an internal short on the sender. The threaded post on the sender has a metal tab beneath it that leads to the potentiometer. sometimes people turn the nut that secures the wire so hard the stud turns and twists the metal tab so it shorts the sender. I've posted pictures in that thread.

hi , i called the shop and told him if i take the unit out of the tank and move the arm up and down the gauge will work . he told me to turn the gauge abit , he said it must be getting caught on something , i am going to try that in the morning . thanks, i will let you know how i make out doing that .
