Gas gauge problem

The gas gauge needle on the instrument panel moves way past the E (empty) mark when the ignition key is turned to the on position. While the engine is running, the needle never goes beyond the 1/4 of tank mark. The tank is filled with gas. Any suggestions?

Re: Gas gauge problem

Maybe a short or loose electrical connection on the sending unit at the tank? If not that, I would suspect the float mechanism inside the tank. Just hunches.

Re: Gas gauge problem

Get a jumper wire with alligator clips on the ends, next go to the back of the gauge and hook the jumper from the post marked sender or just S, to the ground post marked G,generally black wire. Now turn ignition on, if gauge only goes up to the previous 1/4 tank position, then you need a new gauge. If gauge now pegs up to the full mark you probably need a new sender.Next go back to the fuel tank sender and ground the sender wire there with the ignition on,Gauge should peg, if it doesn't,go for a long drive and get as much fuel out of that tank as possible. When you get back you should remove the tank sender and replace it,NOTE, most senders are universal and will have to be tweaked to make them work accurately with your particular tank.
