i have a 90 wellcraft, the gas gauge jumps back and forth between one half and three quaters of a tank even when sitting on the trailer. i cleaned all the wires on the gauge and the tank which were clean anyway, just started doing this the last couple times out. im thinking its the gauge but not sure any help would be great. thanks

Re: gas gauge

Why is it the gauge is always blamed when that is rarely the issue. We need a little more information. Is that the ONLY fuel level that causes the issue. When happens when close to empty or full? Have you recently done "any" electrical or mechanical work on the boat?

actually it does it even between three quaters and full also, i try not to let the fuel get below a half tank so i dont know if it acts the same way between empty and half. i have not done any electrical work to the boat recently and i know all the electrical connections are clean. boat is a 1990 and the gauges are original.

Re: gas gauge

Ground or not -- absence of it would not make a gauge fluctuate with any regularity. Presence of a ground would not do that either. It almost appears as though there is a circuit breaker cycling that is loading and unloading the electrical system. If the gauge is properly wired and the boat is not moving whatsoever, the gauge should not move.
