Gas in my oil?

I have an '04 Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke. It has been about a year since it was last used. I pulled it out the other day, cleaned the carb, then went to pull it. After several pulls I noticed a fuel/oil substance dripping from what looked like out of the carb, and the exhaust. I unscrewed the oil fill, and that same oil/gas mixture came spilling out the fill. So I pulled the drain plug and emptied all the gas/oil. My question, how did my oil compartment get filled with gas? Was that gas in there? How bad of a problem is this? How can I fix it? I also found out that the last person to use it took it out, it ran than died. He said he pulled it for about ten minutes trying to start it, could that have forced gas into other parts of the engine. Sorry for the novel, but I haven't seen anything like this before.

My guess...
Stuck float in the carb?
After several pulls of no start, combustion chamber filled with gasoline and seeped past the rings into the oil supply.

When things are right, it should start within a couple of pulls.
