Noticed tihs weekend that I have gas in the water around the motor whenever I shut it off. Not a huge amount; but enough that I can see & smell it. Slick is broken up, not a big solid slick & extends maybe 3' around the motor (if that gives you an idea of how much gas is coming out). No gas smell while running the motor & it seems to be starting & running smooth. Motor is a 1999. Is there a float or something that might need to be adjusted to keep the bowls from overflowing? Maybe a valve that's should be closing that sticking? I have the factory manual (not a repair manual), but didn't see anything in there.

Rifca.....With the engine not running, pump up the primer bulb and keep pressure on it. At the same time, check the bowls for leaks around the gasket area. The "plastic" bowls have a tendancy to warp and leak. Keep us posted....Thanks.

Thanks Jim. Boat is at the lake - drove wife's car up this weekend, so couldn't bring it back to work on it. I'll be checking it then & you can bet I'll give an update or have more questions.

If there are other things to check if it's not leaking there, please let me know.

Sure....always check fuel lines on the engine. Check the midsection for any fuel dribbling down the side from the lower pan. This could point you in the direction of the leak. Check your spark plugs and make sure they are all good to go. Have there been any changes in rpm that would indicate a loss of power from one or more cylinders?

These all come next, for right now, check the obvious. Leaking bowls, gas lines, fuel system in general. If it ain't obvious, we'll go from there.

Good Luck!!

Re: Gas in water after shutting off 200hp Evinrude

It's been about a month, but I finally got a chance to check out the motor. Wasn't thinking when I asked about the bowls... it's a FITCH, so there aren't any. What i did find though is a gas leak at what I think is the fuel injector for the bottom cylinder on the port side. There's one of these to the right of each spark plug as viewed from the side of the motor. Bottom one leaks - not much, but enough to see it get wet & run down around the clamp -- especially at higher RPMs. Motor had the recall kit (horseshoe clamps, heavier bolts, etc.) installed about 1 1/2 or 2 years ago.

Is it common for the injectors to leak after that modification?

Also, is there a seal or gasket of some sort that needs to be replaced or is fixing this just a matter of re-tightening the bolts (2)... if so, what should I do to ensure they don't loosen again?

Finally, is there a trick to getting at the lower bolt? It's below the lower part of the motor housing; don't think I could get to it w/o removing the housing and not sure how that's done.

Rob

There wasn't a leak problem with the injectors, The modification kit retained them in the cylinder head better so they would not come loose.

Your fuel leak may be only the o-rings that seal the fuel lines where they insert into the injector. You should move the lower motor pan over a little for more access. Just remove the 4 screws on the port side.
