Gas leak at carb

If I am supposed to find the answer by searching previous posts, sorry, can't seem to get anywhere.

1976, 85HP Johnson outboard. Took the cover off the front of the carb so I could spray fogger. (Then while holding the cover, I saw it has a hole marked "fogger." Oh well.)

Anyway, when I started the engine, using the electric choke, gas ran out of the carb and spilled down. Where should I look to find where the gas is coming from? Later when I resarted it without the choke, it also spilled gas.

Other than that, it runs very well. No problems caused by the gas leak as far as I can tell. It doesn't seem to leak gas when running at idle speed. Not being in the water, I didn't want to rev it up, and as I said, it runs well when in the water.

Your help appreciated. Thanks.

Peter, it sounds like gas is overflowing the carb bowl and leaking out.
Your carb float needs adjustment and/or faulty float valve.
In other words, you'll need some carb work to remedy it.

Re: Gas leak at carb

These older carbs did tend to leak very small amounts of fuel out the front of the carb, esp when the engine was tilted up, out of the water. Your fuel leak sounds excessive. You did not mention if the fuel leaks from both carbs. Possible the internal float is stuck on that carb, or that the float's needle and seat is just worn out.
