Alright, I have a new problem. My QD-19 10HP johnson runs great, but when tilted all the way up it leaks gas and it drips out into the boat from under the cover. Is this due to a sticky float in the carb or am I way off base? Any other suggestions on where to look would be great!

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
It's a good idea to release the pressure from the tank after you're done running the motor for the day. Leave the cap slightly loose so that it won't build up pressure from expansion. Just remember to tighten it down next time you run the motor.
Tilting the motor changes the float level in the carb and can allow fuel to run through. You might want to run the motor (gas cap loosened) until ALMOST all of the fuel is run out of the motor. You'll start to hear the motor pick up revs just before it dies - shut it off then so you don't run it too lean at the very end. If you do it enough you'll be able to run it for X-seconds and know when to shut it off without it running lean at all. You run enough oil in it that it shouldn'e be a problem running lean, but it doesn't hurt to err on the safe side.
- Scott

Should I run gas out to prevent leaking in between uses as well as while fishing? The gas also leaks out while I'm fishing with it tilted up. Is this a problem or should I just leave it down when I'm on the lake? In the down position it drips a little into the water, off as well as running. Unusual or not?

Hi Kevin
If you actually have drips from the carb while in the down position (this would not include a residule drip left from tilting) Then you may need to replace the float, float valve or check for proper float level. How ever the situation you describe sounds to be some what normal for these models. One little drip of fuel/oil on the water spreads to look like a very large rainbow in very short order. These motors are from a time when we were not so environmently sencitive. As Chinewalker suggests just release the presure from the tank proir to tilting. If your fishing or hunting in shollow water go head and tilt (presure off), even with the motor down, fishing in choppy water is enough to bounch the float and cause dripping.Open the cap. When the motor is tilted, most of the drips fall into the boat and slosh around with the bilge water. This make it look like a lot of fuel as well.Yes this makes things a little messy. No problem just wash out the boat with some Ivory liquid or Dawn, etc.

Awesome! Thanks for the help alcan and Chinewalker. I'll check that stuff out & get back to you if it doesn't help.

Just so you know, this motor is on a 12 ft. mirrocraft v-hull(rowboat) so the bilge water you speak of, if any, gets my feet wet!

Kevin
