Not sure if I should ask this here or in the Mercruiser section. If I'm posting in the wrong place please move it.

Ok... So. I'm sitting at my computer reading some stuff and realize it's getting a litte warm in the house so I open up the windows. A few minutes later I start smelling gas. The first thing I do is go to the window and take a big wiff and determing the smell is definaly coming from outside the window (good thing since there is no gas stored inside the house). My boat (powered by a '79 Mercruiser) happens to be parked right outside the window. I look at the back of the boat and see a clear liquid dripping off of it. Since it hasn't rained much in the last couple days I'm assuming this is the source of the smell.

I go outside to find gas dripping out of the vent. I then slowly open up the gas cap and gas starts to pour out. I then closed the cap again and lowered the jack on the trailer all the way to the ground (filler and vent hoses connect to the very back end of the tank). Next I slowly open the gas cap again. I can hear a bunch of air escaping out of the cap and then a bunch of gas flows out then stops.

I then put the cap back on and go get a rag to wipe up the gas. When I come back, just a few minutes later, I opened the gas cap again and again I hear air hissing out (no gas this time)

Now for a litte history with the boat...

I bought the boat last year. Fill the tank and put it in the water. The motor over heated and I cracked the exhaust manifolds so the boat sat the rest of the summer and winter (without any gas leaking). This sping I put new manifolds on and discovered more problems caused by all the water I had int the motor so the boat still sits in the yard waiting for me to finish fixing it.

bottom line is that this tank of gas has sat for about 9 months without ever leaking. The boat hasn't moved or even been started. It warm out today but not hot (we've had much hotter days this summer). What is causing all this pressure in the gas tank?

I'm going to go out and crack the gas cap again and see if there is more pressure built up in the tank.

I just checked it again after checking this message and no more hissing when I open the filler.

Gas expands as it warms. Sounds like you filled the tank up right to the brim during a cooler time and now it is expanding and overflowing from the warmer weather.

That was the only thing I could think of too but we have had many MUCH warmer days then today. I wouldn't be so conserned about it if I had just filled the tank this morning.

I just checked it again and so far no more pressure.

Re: Gas leaking out of vent

One thing that will cause gas to leak out is if the vent hose has any low spots. It should be installed so all parts of the vent hose slope toward the tank.

If it has a low spot where fuel could sit in the line in a low spot then it effectly plugs the vent hose. As the tank warms up durning the day the pressure builds and forces the air and fuel out of the tank vent line. Of course if the tank is too full will be no air to vent only fuel.

siphon out a gallon or two. you going to have to do it sooner or later. year old gas needs to be run in the lawnmower, not in your boat engine , you can add several gallons to the car with new gas.

I probably dumped 1/4 to 1/2 a gallon when it started to overflow. After that happened I was actualy thinking about trying to siphon some out and put it in my car (mixed with fresh gas).

Happens to me all the time,
a good sunny day and time to drop the nose.
On the plus side my alum tank lasted
26 years.

My Specrtrum used to do that for no apparent reason. I always thought that the vent line may have a kink in it. I sold the boat so I don't know what the problem was but it got so I left the gas cap a little loose and the bow down when the weather was warm.
