gas line problem

I developed an air leak in my gas line on my 2004, 25hp mercury motor. I thought the problem was in the connector to the motor or the gas tank. I purchased Sierra connectors and they didn't work at all. The connector to the motor attached alright but leaked fuel very badly. The connector going to the tank wouldn't attach at all. When comparing the Sierra connectors with the mercury connectors they were considerably different. Of course I was assembling in the field which made the day even worse. Undoutedly I must have purchased the wrong parts. But this is what the O'Reilly sales person sold me. NAPA and Auto Zone had the same parts. I don't have a mercury dealer in town. Has anyone else had trouble?

Re: gas line problem

I ran into the same thing. Picked up an engine connector for my '98 75 HP Merc. The latching mechanism is set too far back to lock the connector to the motor. The package is marked Mercury and in the stores I went to, all of these are the same so either Merc has two versions of the same connector style, Tempo mismarked a ton of connector packages, or Tempo does not provide one of the versions.

Re: gas line problem

The two connectors are different. The one on the tank end has two seals and is longer than the motor end which just has one. Aftermarket tanks and connectors I've seen are only of the single seal variety. So what you may need is one of those Sierra tanks instead of the Merc one.

By the way, ALL AFTERMARKET FUEL LINES AND CONNECTORS ARE CRAP!!! They get hard as a rock in just a few years. Factory lines often outlive the motor. At most, you'd have to replace just once for the life of the motor. You'll be replacing aftermarket lines several times per motor lifetime.
