I have a late 1950's 5.5 hp Johnson. It starts and runs fine, but I get an oilly film in the water. I assume it is from the exhaust. I was told that this is normal, but I really don't want oil/gas in the water if I don't have to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You should be running a 1950s model on a pretty oily mix , 20:1, so oil on the water is unavoidable.

If you are concerned about the environmental issues use a synthetic TCW-3 oil as that is biodegradable.

If you are still not satisfied then look for a more modern engine than will run on a 50:1 mix or better still a four stroke engine that does not use any oil in the fuel at all.

If that is still not good enough get an electric outboard or a truly environmentally friendly sailing boat or a set of oars!
