I have a 1978 Evinrude 20hp. I took it into the shop the other day and the mechanic asked me what mix ratio i was using. On the side of the engine where you hook up the fuel line it has an original decal saying 100:1 fuel to oil. He says that I should be using 50:1. I trust the guy because he has been working on outboards for a few decades, but I would like some second opinions.

50:1 for sure.

They recalled those motors just to replace the sticker.

50:1 is the correct ratio and 25:1 if you rebuild it and that's for 10hrs.

A 1978 motor should not have ever had a decal saying 100:1.

that mix was introduced in 1985 but service buletins were issued a couple of years later advising that they should in fact be run on 50:1.

A 1987 model may have had a 100:1 decal, I'm not sure exactly when they stopped it.
