As you probably read in the subject I have a 1981 40hp 2 cylinder Mercury that is in pretty good shape. I'm having a problem after leaving it sitting for the winter months. I can start the motor but only by using starting fluid. If I don't continually spray starting fluid into the intake then the engine will die. I have replaced the gas that was in the boat with new gas.

Does anyone know where I should look first to find my gas problem?

Yes, I'd say you have a fuel delivery problem. First off, don't use the starting fluid as it does not have lubrication. Use a mix of gas and the appropriate 2 cycle oil in a squirt bottle to start. Check to see if there is any blockage or restriction from the gas tank to the motor, then check fuel lines and fuel pump. If they check out, then you need to remove and clean carburator(s).

What about air to fuel mixture? We just cleaned the carb and it seems fine so I doubt it is gunked up. We also checked fuel lines and didn't find a problem.
