gas questions

well my dad always put the good gas in his old 1983 caprice classic right idk he does it. well he would like it if it would be easier to buy good gas for my little outboard when he fills up his tanka nd my gas cans.

is premium going to hurt my motor in anyway and i doubt theres any performance isssues.

and when theres a sticker on the pump that saids contains less then 10%% ethenal in my tank that means the stuff with corn in it and fuel problems can occur with it liek water in gas tank right?

u havent seen my posts in the evinrude johnsons page. ive been pracitcally rebuilding my motor but noy the powerhead lol. wow cant u nvr seen it. its been going on for about 4 months i think.

its a 1959 evinrude 10hp sportwin

being a moderator, i read many post every day. it is impossible for keep them straight. everytime you start a thread you should identify what you are talking about.

now to the question, you motor was designed to run on 87 octane lead free gas. changing the fuel hoses to alcohol resistant hoses, and cleaning the carb, will, take care of the enthanol problem. adding Seafoam to your fuel is another preventative measure. no you do not need expensive gas.

A fuel's octane rating is known as a measurement of the fuel's anti-knock properties (ability to burn without exploding) or its stability.

So, the higher the octane, the higher the the severity of the combustion environment before spontaneous or abnormal combustion occurs.

To answer your question, running higher octane will create three things:

1. Your engine will not be hurt by running higher octane
2. Adversely, your wallet will be hurt by unnecessary running of higher octane
3. You stand a chance of requiring more frequent de-carb on your engines because your engine isn't designed to run higher octane, so it will potentially product more combustion byproducts.

So quick answer is no it won't hurt the function but isn't required as the engine was designed to run on 87 octane.

And, as TD said, the hose changes will assist in the ethanol side of things to ensure the blended fuels won't affect them.

To me "good gas" is gas that is clean ,no junk. What you are refering to is higher octane gas."Good gas" is kind of a confusing term.If your dad is using higher octane in a motor rated for 87 octane he is wasting his money.Pretty sure the Caprice classic is rated for 87 octane.

lol i already tired convincing my dad to use 87 but he saids " its an older motor it need high premium gas" lol one day when i get my car hopely his car will still be good ill do a decarb for him

right now im running its on 87 grade cause i specifically told him to put that in well anyways

lol i run my atv on that stuff =D lol i should stop
