looking at used boats, found one we kind of like with a 5.7 L/alpha one; our friend took a quick look at it and noticed a gas smell on the engine oil dipstick. what are the possible causes for this and what are the chances that this is not a major problem?

if its and older motor with a mech fuel pump that would be the first place to look.

all boats get some gas in the oil from normal running but normaly it would be changed before it smelled real bad

the motor has to checked that its running correctly and on all cylinders plenty run OK on 7

tommays

If it is a carburetor equipped engine with a mechanical fuel pump, the pump diaphram could have a hole in it. A marine fuel pump has a fitting on it to vent any gas back to the carburetor air horn so the boat dosen't turn into a gernade. Always replace one with a marine fuel pump for that reason.

also we understand the previous owners didn't run the boat alot and did their own maintenance. they are the second owner and the engine has 386 or so hours on it.
if the fuel pump needs to be replaced what's your estimate on what it will cost to be replaced???

i dont think you can do much until you NO what you have and are sure thats the problem

there are some numbers on the motor down by the starter that you need to ID the motor

tommays
