Was looking over my boat (87 17' Bayliner) this afternoon & all the sudden gas started spewing out of the vent hole, opened up the fuel gas cap & released a bunch of pressure, all okay now.. Now I cant figure out why that happened, I just replaced my gas cap & neck wich required me to buy a new hose that runs from the gas cap to the tank, clamped it up good & no leaks, why would this be happening? if the vent is letting gas through i'd guess it would be letting air into the tank aslo, this is weird, any suggestions?? I did tigten up the clamp on the vent hose yesterday, but still dont make sens

Sounds like vent may have foriegn material in it, maybe from new cap.

yea but if gas got out, air should be able to get in right??.. I had the boat tilted as far down as the jack would allow it, I'm wondering if the gas was high enough that it got into that breather line & didn't allow any air into the tank, would that cause it to boil over?

Fuel vapors will build up when towing or just when sitting in he sun. Could it be that old cap vent was not working properly, then new cap vent released pressure because it was closed off. I leave my vent open ever since I ruined my new carpet from not leaving my vent open.

I bought a three gallon plastic tank last year. When I let it sit in the garage for a week with the vent closed it inflates like a baloon. Amazing how much pressure unvented gas can build. I leave the vent open now and close it when transporting the boat. Supposedly it is more prone to water getting in the gas that way.
