Gas Tank Cleaning

So I just bought a 89 Bayliner Capri w/ 85 hp Force Outboard. As it turns out, there is crap in the gas tank. I've tried to clean it out with solvents & flushing out with water. Does anyone have any recommendations for cleaning the tank?

The previous owner just installed new floors, so I don't want to rip them up or buy a new tank (at least until the season is over). I have a 6 gallon portable tank, but it bounces around to much at WOT and doesn't always supply enough fuel.

I just purchased an inline fuel filter (as there isn't one). The only fuel filtering capabilities are the simple filter attached to the fuel pump, the fuel water separator and the screen attached to the fuel intake. I believe that the screen attached to the fuel intake is the culprit, so would it be advisable to punch through this screen and let the one of the other filters handle the filtering?

Re: Gas Tank Cleaning

Most built in tanks have an electric fuel gauge sender. Usually these are accessable thru a deck port or other removable panel. If you have one of these, you can remove the sender and have a 5" hole to work to clean out the gunk. Stick some acetone and a long handle brush and scrub away. Siphon out the stuff and you should be good.

Acetone. Saturate it with bulk carburetor cleaner If that doesn't work consider lining the tank.
