Gas Tank Filling Trouble

Greetings,

So my 18? Cobia CC had a replacement under deck fuel tank (17 gallon) put in a couple of years ago. I just bought the boat a month ago so I?m trying to work out some of the bugs. I?m having trouble getting a full tank of gas in the boat. I ran it dry a couple of nights ago and I was only able to get in about 11 gallons before the fill tube would be filled up and not allow me to put more gas in the tank. The fill tube just fills up with gas and overflows over the top. The fill tube extends down approx 4? or so into the tank. I?m wondering if when the gas gets above the bottom of the fill tube if that would be enough pressure to stop gas from going above it. I was thinking of taking the fill tube out (held in by 3 screws and a gasket and cutting off the bottom 3? or so to make it close to flush with the top of the tank. Does this sound like a good idea and would there be any side effect to doing so? I?ve checked the vent hose and it is not clogged (hence a mouthful of midgrade ? nasty!).

A buddy said that because the filler tube is located at the rear of the tank that I might have to level off the boat to fill it up properly ? meaning that the boat is tilted up and the gas all levels out in the back of the tank? I guess I could put a level on the boat and see if that is true. What do you think? Thanks for the help.

Re: Gas Tank Filling Trouble

Are you sure you don't have a 12 gallon tank? The tank should "burp" and allow more fuel if there was room. Drop the bow of the boat to really see if there is room for more gas. It also sounds like the vent tube is down in the tank also.
The gas pumps will not force the fuel into the filler tube, as soon as there is any pressure the pump will shut off.

Re: Gas Tank Filling Trouble

Yes, the vent tube is not clogged as I sucked up a mouthful of gas. This also sounds like the vent tube was also below the gas level...

The previous owner (a buddy of mine) who put the tank in said it was 17 gallon tank. I realize that the gas pumps shut off as soon as the tank's level approaches the bottome of the noozle. I will try to lower the bow for the next fill up and see if that does anything. If this works, hopefully gas won't leak out of the vent tube when the boat is put back on the jeep.

What do you think? Is this common? What do others think about cutting the filler tube? Thanks...
