Gas tank ? Memories of my childhood, Interesting!!!

Okay everyone, I think I am going to stop looking at fuel as my problem. Everything fuel related has looked super clean like the carb, when I done the rebuild, if it wasn't for me needing a couple of gaskets from the kit, I probably wouldn't have performed the rebuild but I did and all the rubber parts were soft. All other orifices were clean, filters never showed any trash at all. The antisiphon valve was also very clean and working properly. The intake tube must be connected to the top of the tank where the 90 deg fitting goes in or it wouldn't pull gas out, right? I still have the necesary panels removed to access my tank but I think I would be wasting more time if I were to try and remove the tank. I really suspect my problems are in the points, wires or plugs. I have suspected the coil. My next thing is to do the tune up with new points, cap, rotor, wires, plugs etc. I am still torn between ordering parts online, or visiting my local dealer and having them order the parts for me. I found everything I need at E Basic Power which is located near where I used to live in Emerald Isle NC. I am a native of Emerald Isle NC, where I grew up on the island. I was six months old when we moved over on to the Island with a couple of other families. This was in 1969, we had a store and that was it, we traveled to the mainland via Ferry that ofcourse isn't there now as I barely remember my father helping build the highrise bridge that connects the Emerald Isle end to the mainland of Swansboro. My father became the road maintenance man, the Police chief, the Fire Chief and the head EMT. I had a great childhood on the Island as it was not very populated at the time and fish and shellfish were abundant in the sound. I remember and have pictures of Emerald Isle firetruck #1. I remember when we took #1 to south Boston VA to have it repaired and returned with #2, a tanker. Our father being the Police Chief let me and my older sisters have the run of the Island, with a get out of jail free card if you know what I mean. It is strange to return there now as everything has grown into a resort. The last time my father and i were there, we had to visit the Town Hall for information and my Dad told the lady that he had poured the concrete and built that Town Hall many years ago. I am rambling about this because my father and I just spent some time looking at old pictures. Only anyone that knows of Emerald Isle or Atlantic Beach in North carolina can apreciate what I am saying. Anyhow, when I saw that ebasic power is located in Harkers Island which is on the mainland very near where I grew up, I thought if I was going to order parts it would be from them. Heck my Dad would probably want to go there and pick up the parts, any reason to visit where we used to live for 14 years. I hope it is okay to share this personal stuff here on this forum. Thanks for the help everyone!! If anyone knows of what I am talking about, please reply. Donwon

Re: Gas tank ? Memories of my childhood, Interesting!!!

I was hoping that it was okay to share these memories here. I have to many projects going at once. My boat over the last few seasons started to perform poorly, gradually, over about five outings. Now it will barely run, having to work the throttle just to keep it running at all, real bad, no WOT! I was told it sounded like a fuel issue, so I rebuilt the carb, but it looked really good inside prior, and I have never seen any debree in the filters. I removed the necesary panels to access my gas tank. I inspected the antisiphon valve, clean and working properly. It was atached to a 90 deg fitting which I also removed. I was told that the intake tube was attached, or should be to the 90 deg fitting. It wasn't and I think that the tube is attached to where the fitting entered the tank, if it has fallen down in the tank it would'nt be pulling gas. After a couple of mouth fulls of gasoline, I decided to rule out the fuel as my problem. It passed the fuel pump volume test on the muffs and while on the lake last I looked into the carb as my wife worked the throttle and saw two small streams of gas shoot into the carb, I think it is going to be easy as performing a proper tune up. I have suspected the coil, but now I suspect the points as I have only inspected them and the wiring, cap, rotor etc. I should be doing more work on it rather than wasting the time of all the kind people who make up this forum. Parts is my next question, I need to do transom service also. My first thought was to go to a local marine dealer so as I would have a person to deal with face to face, however all they do is order the parts for me. I would bet that ordering from say Ebasic power would save me some money, although I would have to pay shipping. I haven't done any price comparisons yet, carb kit without gasket was $40.00 local. I just want to get the correct parts as I have all my info together. I have other topics about my issues started which I hope isn't a problem. The next time she is off the trailer, I have to be ready to replace bunk boards. I supose my parts question and ruling out my gas tank are my questions. Is my intake tube attached to the black panel on top of the tank and if it had fallen down into the tank, would it still pump gas. I will get to work doing a proper tune up, instead of sitting here at this puter typing. I will post my progress. Thanks everyone!! Thanks BEEF as I think you responded to another topic I started. I like your screen name. Where's the BEEF? Yes, spending time with my father is great. The other day, Dad, Me and my 7 yr old went fishing. Awesome feeling, three generations.

DW:
When you rebuilt the carb did you use the old plastic float? They will screw you becouse they get saturated with gas and cause all sorts of problems.
If its the old one throw it as far as possable and
put a brass replacement in.
Good luck
Beef :D

Yes, I did put the original float back. It is plastic, but holow, not like a sponge. I know what you are refering to, the composite ones where you mash your thumb nail into to see if it is saturated. I feel pretty sure mine is okay, but will consider putting the brass one in down the road. Thanks for talking to me Beef. I just need to get some parts ordered and get to work
