I just bought a 1970 starchief with no gas tank. It looks like it should have two on on each side of motor. :):)

Re: Gas tank on 1970 starchief.

My Starchief has two, one on each side of the motor. Is this the best layout? I would prefer a belly tank as far forward as possible. It would change the center of gravity and that would be good for the type of fishing I do. My boat, with the canvas up, likes to sail away on me if the wind picks up. For me having a motor / kicker / gas tanks / battery all back in the stern makes the boat squat in the rear. This becomes evident when trolling; it likes to fall off a straight line. Lot?s of coarse corrections and that can be tiring for a long days fishing. The other disadvantage of two tanks is the weight distribution form side to side. If you get low on fuel on one side the boat tends to list to the heavy side. Not a big problem when trolling but it can drive guys crazy when on plane. I have trim tabs that I can adjust to level out the boat when on plane.
